Aiswarya Handicrafts is all about keeping the beautiful tradition of the Aranmula Kannadi alive. This one-of-a-kind handcrafted metal mirror has roots that go all the way back to the Vedic period. It's cherished for its divine composition and the clear, distortion-free reflections it offers, making it a true gem of cultural heritage. Each mirror is lovingly crafted by skilled artisans who use secret metal alloys and age-old techniques that have been passed down through generations. With incredible precision and a lot of patience, every piece doesn’t just reflect an image; it captures the very essence of India’s craftsmanship, turning it into a beloved symbol of elegance, authenticity, and tradition around the globe. Unlike mass-produced items, the Aranmula Kannadi is handmade, showcasing its unique imperfections. While typical glass mirrors reflect images thanks to a silver coating on the back, the Aranmula Metal Mirror is special because it reflects from the front surface. Its popularity waned with the rise of cheaper, commercially made glass mirrors, but in the last decade, the demand for Aranmula Kannadi has surged, especially overseas. Creating this enchanting mirror requires a tremendous amount of determination, perseverance, and patience. Local mud from paddy fields is used to create the mold for pouring in the molten alloy mix, employing the cire-perdue or lost wax method of casting. Even with the greatest care, only about 60% of the cast metal mirrors can be salvaged, as many get damaged during production. Once cast, the metal mirror is polished with finely ground burnt clay powder mixed with special oil on a jute cloth. Achieving that highly reflective surface can take anywhere from one day to several days of polishing. When the finish is just right, the mirror is beautifully mounted on various artistic brass frames.
